One of the most common questions I get from athletes is:
"If you were starting from scratch and had six months to prepare for HYROX, what would you focus on?"
Most people expect my answer to be more sled work, more race simulations, and more suffering.
It isn't.
If I truly had six months to prepare for a HYROX race, I'd spend the majority of that time building fitness, not racing in training.
After coaching HYROX athletes and competing myself, I've learned that the athletes who perform best on race day aren't the ones doing the most simulations.
They're the ones who spend months building the aerobic engine, strength foundation, running economy, and movement efficiency that HYROX actually rewards.
Race day is simply the opportunity to express the fitness you've already built.
Here's exactly how I would structure six months of HYROX training.

The biggest mistake I see athletes make is jumping straight into race specific workouts before they've built the engine to support them.
Instead, I'd spend the first eight weeks developing my aerobic system.
Why?
Because your aerobic fitness influences nearly every aspect of HYROX performance.
It determines your ability to:

HYROX is an aerobic event disguised as a fitness race.
The stronger your engine, the better everything else works.
Increase Zone 2 Volume
I'd gradually build aerobic volume through:

The goal isn't speed.
It's durability.
This phase is about teaching your body to work efficiently for long periods of time while recovering quickly.
Build Running Frequency
Most athletes don't need more hard running.
They need more consistent running.
I'd aim for:

Consistency beats intensity during this phase.
Establish Strength Foundations
Strength training would focus on simple compound lifts that carry over to HYROX.
My priorities would include:

Nothing flashy.
Just building a stronger, more resilient athlete.

Once the aerobic foundation is established, it's time to increase intensity.
This is where many athletes make significant gains in HYROX performance because they're finally building speed on top of a strong aerobic base.
Add Threshold Training
Threshold work teaches you to sustain faster paces while controlling fatigue.
This is one of the most valuable sessions in any HYROX training plan.

Introduce VO₂ Max Training
I'd also include one higher intensity running session each week.

It's improving your aerobic ceiling so race pace feels more sustainable.
Continue Strength Development
Strength training continues to support race performance.
I'd focus on:

Quality always comes before fatigue.

Now we begin connecting everything together.
The engine has been built.
Strength has improved.
Running fitness is established.
Now it's time to become efficient at HYROX.
Increase Race Specific Training
This is where compromised running and station transitions become important.
Examples include:

The goal isn't to destroy yourself.
The goal is teaching your body how to perform efficiently under fatigue.
Improve Technical Efficiency
This is one of the easiest places to save valuable minutes.
Small improvements across every station add up quickly over the course of an entire race.
I'd spend significant time refining:

Develop rhythm and pacing.
Sled Push
Improve body position and force application.
Sled Pull
Reduce wasted movement.
Wall Balls
Dial in breathing and movement consistency.
Burpee Broad Jumps
Master efficient movement patterns.
Technique often saves more time than improved fitness alone.

By this point, your fitness should already be there.
Now it's about learning how to use it.
Complete Strategic Simulations
Not every weekend.
Not every workout.
Just enough to:

Refine Your Race Pace
This is where I'd dial in:

Many HYROX races are lost because athletes simply start too fast.

At this point, you aren't trying to become fitter.
You're trying to arrive fresh.
Fitness has already been built.
Now it's time to let it shine.
Reduce Training Volume
Overall volume decreases while intensity remains relatively high.
This helps preserve fitness while allowing fatigue to disappear.
Prioritize Recovery
Recovery becomes part of the training plan.
I'd focus on:

Many athletes undo months of work by trying to squeeze in one last hard session.
Don't.

Race week should feel surprisingly easy.
If you're exhausted during race week, you've probably done too much.
My priorities become very simple.
Nutrition
Increase carbohydrates to maximize glycogen stores.
Stay on top of hydration and electrolytes.
Sleep
Protect your recovery.
Nothing matters more this week.
Confidence
Trust the work you've already done.
No hero workouts.
No fitness tests.
No second guessing.
Just execute.

If I had six months to prepare for HYROX, here's what I'd intentionally avoid.
Constant Race Simulations
These create unnecessary fatigue and often interfere with building long term fitness.
Random High Intensity Workouts
Every workout should have a purpose.
Hard for the sake of hard isn't a training plan.
Excessive Station Volume
Many athletes become obsessed with stations while neglecting the aerobic system that powers the entire race.
Chasing Fatigue
Feeling exhausted doesn't automatically mean you're improving.
Progress comes from smart, consistent training.

If I had six months to prepare for HYROX, my roadmap would be simple.

The fastest HYROX athletes don't just train hard.
They train in the right order.
Build the engine first.
Everything else becomes easier because of it.
